The Eleganza 4 - 5th castor is activated when the bed brakes are in the GO position. With the optional fifth castor activated, the bed is then easier to steer and push around, greatly improving bed manoeuvrability. It has the role of a steering wheel, used for patient transfers, allowing for smoother navigation.

The fifth wheel is used during patient transfers, and the improved manoeuvrability makes the bed easier to control in narrow and long corridors or smaller areas.

While the safety of the patient can be the bed's top priority with the carer still in mind, the fifth castor is known to avoid or reduce the risk of personnel torsional rotation while turning, and helps in the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, among other injuries while pushing the bed.
