A gluteal shelf, sometimes referred to as a "butt shelf" or "butt ledge" in casual conversation, is a term used to describe an exaggerated or prominent curvature of the buttocks. This curvature creates a more pronounced separation between the lower back and the upper part of the buttocks, giving the appearance of a "shelf" or "ledge." The term is not a medical or anatomical term, but rather a colloquial or slang expression to describe this physical feature.

A gluteal shelf can be a result of various factors, such as genetics, body composition, and muscle development. Some individuals may naturally have a more pronounced gluteal shelf due to their genetic predisposition. In others, it could be the result of increased muscle mass in the gluteal muscles, which include the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus, often achieved through targeted exercises and workouts.

Additionally, an individual's body fat distribution can play a role in the prominence of a gluteal shelf. People who tend to store more fat in their buttocks may have a more pronounced gluteal shelf compared to those who store fat in other parts of their bodies. It's important to note that a gluteal shelf is not an indicator of overall health or fitness, as its appearance varies greatly depending on individual body composition and genetic factors.
